The low back also known as the lumbar spine is made up of five vertebrae and forms a lordotic curve. The lumbar vertebrae are the largest within the full spine because they are what take on most of the weight that we carry. While there are five vertebrae with in the lumbar spine the major most injuries occur to the fourth and fifth vertebrae. When injury occurs at this level in the lumbar spine it usually causes injury or stress on the sciatic nerve.
The sciatic nerve is the most common nerve to be irritated in the lumbar spine and is made up of nerve roots form L4, L5 and S1. This nerve delivers messages to the thigh, shin, and foot. When injury occurs symptoms include numbness, tingling, sharp pain and /or even weakness in the lower extremities. Most bent over movements cause a hinge point at the fifth lumbar and the sacrum (AKA tailbone). If the weight is to great, you have bad form or you are weakness in any of the low back or pelvic muscles than sciatic pain is likely to occur. Chiropractic care has been shown to be the most beneficial for relieving and addressing any biomechanical irregularities that may be causing the pain. Low back pain in general and even sciatic pain are one of the main causes of employees missing work. It is recommended that people with any kind of back pain find help at their local Chandler chiropractic office.
